Yumi Wilson is a tenured journalism professor at San Francisco State University and a former news reporter and editor. She is a recipient of a Fulbright grant and Knight-Wallace journalism fellowship. In 2013, she was chosen as one of the 12 smartest women of color on Twitter. She started attending JAWS in the early ’90s when she had just arrived at The San Francisco Chronicle, thanks to the urging of her then-colleague, Lisa Chung. Inspired by her first JAWS CAMP, where she met amazing women and sipped delightful wine against a gorgeous backdrop, she kept coming back to JAWS for years while working at newspapers.
She took a few years off from JAWS while seeking tenure at San Francisco State, but started coming back to CAMP, first to show folks how to optimize their brand on LinkedIn (2014), and then last year, to take part in the “Practicing Journalism while Female” session. Currently, Yumi serves as a committee member on the JAWS Legacy Fund, where she is helping to create a leadership curriculum for young women in college.
