The Journalism & Women Symposium each year raises money to support our fellowship program, bringing women who are just starting their careers to CAMP. We invite them to meet some of our trailblazers, feel inspired by learning new skills and also share their energy and enthusiasm with the group. We will be bringing 10 fellows to this year’s JAWS Conference and Mentoring Project in Albuquerque, N.M. from Oct. 26 – 28. Applications for next year’s program will be accepted in June.

WHAT IS CAMP?

Each year, JAWS CAMP focuses on strengthening core journalism skills, building personal brands and careers, developing strategies for success in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, and improving the status of women in journalism. Participants enjoy a dynamic experience filled with inspiring speakers, motivating career development sessions, and rewarding networking and mentoring opportunities.

HOW TO SUPPORT US

Journalism & Women Sympoisum relies on support from members and friends to sustain our fellowship program. Learn more about the program and how to donate here.

WHO CAN APPLY?

CAMP fellowships are open to professionals in the early stages of their careers. We are looking for young journalists with at least one year of professional journalism experience. Winners will be selected based on a combination of experience, merit, promise, and financial need. The fellowships will cover the CAMP registration fee and help with the other expenses of attending. In return, fellows will be asked to cover the weekend’s events for the JAWS newsletter, website, and blog. Fellows will also receive a free JAWS membership for the rest of 2012 and all of 2013.

Application deadline for the 2012 fellowships was June 1, 2012.  To apply next year, send all of the following, attached in ONE E-mail, to jawsfellows@gmail.com. Please include your first and last name in the subject line.

  1. A one-page résumé
  2. Two samples of your professional, published work in journalism – If print or online, please include both stories in a single PDF file, with links to the originals. If audio or video, please include live web links to your work.
  3. Personal Statement (no more than 300 words) – Why do you want to attend CAMP? What will you contribute to the group? What do you hope to gain from the CAMP experience?
  4. One letter of recommendation from a current or previous editor, producer, or supervisor in journalism – We would prefer to receive the recommendation letter attached with the rest of your application. However, if your recommender would rather E-mail the letter directly to the fellowship committee, please ask him/her to include your first and last name in the subject line.
