CAMP 2014 FAQ

JAWS CAMP 2014 l

We’re excited to see you at the annual Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) in California this year. Here are a few helpful answers to some of the most Frequently Asked Questions. See you soon!

1. Where can I get a copy of the schedule?

  • You can see our online schedule here (it is mobile-friendly, so you can view it on your phone or tablet as well). We’ll also have printed versions of the schedule at CAMP.

2. What should I wear?

  • Leave the cocktail dresses at home. Bring your favorite jeans and T-shirts, and a bathing suit if you want to take a dip in one of the pools or hot tubs at La Quinta. It’s California, so anything goes. Looks like we’ll have warm days and cool nights with temperatures around 85 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit when the sun is down. So plan to wear warm weather clothes during the day and bring a jacket or sweater for the night.
  • Crazy earrings are a mainstay.
  • We’ll have yoga in the mornings, so feel free to bring workout clothes or use the fitness center.
  • There are 41 pools and hot tubs, so you may want to bring a bathing suit or two.
  • Halloween costumes HIGHLY encouraged. We have a party Friday night.

3. What should I know about Friday night introductions?

  • JAWdess Katherine Lanpher is keeping us honest with a stopwatch: you’ll have 10 seconds to introduce yourself or suffer the evil eye. Make it quick and clever! Make a note of who you might want to meet later.

4. Are there extra expenses I should plan for?

  • The shuttle from the Palm Springs Airport is $35 one way including tip and all fees (so don’t worry about tipping the driver). To pay online, go here (click on “Register” under “CAMP 2014 Shuttle”). You can also pay in person at CAMP.
  • Most of your meals are included, but you will be on your own for lunch on Sunday. This is a good time to meet up with your mentor/mentee.
  • You’ll probably want to spend some money on the very cool items that are part of the silent auction (prices range from $1 to $200 depending on the bidding), the CAMP T-shirt ($25), and some of the other nifty JAWS items that will be for sale at the registration table.
  • We’ll have more than 10 authors joining us for the Books, Browse and Booze on Saturday afternoon, so make sure to save a few bucks for books.
  • When you register, you’ll receive a tab form. Throughout the weekend, you can add items to your tab. Just remember to check out/cash out before you leave and pay your tab before the end of the day Sunday. JAWS is happy to accept VISA or MasterCard, a check and even good ol’ fashioned cash.
  • And make sure to bring cash for the cash bar!

5. What’s your policy on quoting panelists?

  • We tell our panelists, “Don’t say anything you don’t want posted online.” That being said, be courteous. We’re all here to learn and have fun!

6. Can I tweet about what an awesome time I’m having?

7. What equipment should I bring?

  • Business cards if you want to pass them out to new friends.
  • Laptop if: You wish to have one-on-one training, or you are a fellow and will be blogging.
  • Smartphone if you plan to post on social media, post selfies with awesome JAWdesses or add contact details from new friends!
  • Phone, tablet or laptop if you want to see the online conference schedule via SCHED. (Pro tip: Save it as your homepage on your phone or tablet so you can check it at a moment’s notice.)
  • Charging cords so you can power up at one of our charging stations around the meeting rooms.

8. I am within driving distance to La Quinta, but don’t have a car. Can I bum a ride?

9. I am flying into Palm Springs Airport/LAX/Ontario Airport/San Diego, but I need a ride to the hotel. How can I arrange that?

10. This is my first CAMP. Who should I talk to get oriented?

  • Anyone! Making new friends is part of the CAMP experience. There will be also be a CAMP 101 orientation for first-time CAMPers Friday afternoon.
