About 110 journalists attended the JAWS 26th annual conference, or “camp,” Oct. 22-24 at Tapatio Springs Resort in Boerne, Texas, outside San Antonio. Panels throughout the weekend included a group of women covering the Mexico-U.S. Border, the latest trends in food writing and blogging, how to build a profitable freelance career, launching an entrepreneurial multimedia news organization and a special session on the latest tools in technology for journalists.
Other panels focused on emerging trends in mid-career fellowships and teaching journalism at the college level.
Keynote speaker Maria Hinojosa talked about her career with National Public Radio, CNN and PBS, as well as her new media venture, Futuro Media Group.
And the Eileen Shanahan speaker was Heidi Beirich, director of research with the Southern Poverty Law Center. She spoke about the group’s work tracking emerging hate groups and hate crimes across the country.
