JAWS CAMP 2016 l

CAMP2016_preconferenceworkshopsAlong with our keynotes by Danyel Smith, cultural lead at “The Undefeated” for ESPN, and Aminda “Mindy” Marqués Gonzalez, we’ve announced two pre-conference workshops on data journalism and freelancing. The Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) takes place from Oct. 28 to Oct. 30 at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center in Roanoke, Va. Register for the conference today.

Freelance Free for All: So you want to freelance, maybe part time, maybe full time? Maybe you just got laid off and you’re freaking out. Come hear several panels on how to pitch, where to pitch, how much to charge and navigating through freelance contracts. There will be three 45-minute panels (followed by Q&A) and a practice Pitchapalooza. We’ll have a mix of panelists to discuss the topic, including freelance writers, copy editors, videographers and more. The workshop is offered 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, and includes a box lunch. Please bring a laptop, tablet or notebook for notes and pitches. Registration is $85.

Using Data in Everyday Assignments: Data mining isn’t just for investigative journalists and long-form projects. In this hands-on workshop, attendees will learn how to find data and research that will support story development and help beat writers on daily stories. Presenters will talk about public record requests and how to find the data you need, and how best to analyze and interpret it. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet with access to Microsoft Excel. The workshop will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28. Registration is $50.
