CAMP 2018: Claim your courage at JAWS’ inaugural Leadership Symposium

The #MeToo movement has brought attention to workplace intimidation and harassment in all its forms, and countless studies have revealed the gender pay gap to be a persistent problem, particularly for women of color.

It often feels like – in the words of Nikole Hannah Jones – we’re “not supposed to be here.” How can we summon the confidence to rise to leadership positions and better pay? What can we learn from leaders who have gone through similar struggles?

Join JAWS in an inspirational and action-oriented half-day Leadership Symposium the Friday of Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) 2018, featuring lively discussion, reflection exercises and insights from women leaders.

The workshop will be held Friday, Oct. 12, from 1 PM – 4:30 PM. Here’s some more info about our speakers:

Caroline Comport, the founder of Narrative Quest, a leadership and personal development company with the mission of helping journalists and news media companies flourish, will emcee the event and lead a Courageous Confidence workshop on overcoming imposter syndrome.

Ethics professor, media writer and former NPR ombudsman Lisa Shepard will share solutions for change from the recent Power Shift Summit.

Imaeyen Ibanga, senior context producer at AJ+, will meld her personal story with career talk and Beyoncé in her “Careers in Formation” talk.

Editor-in-chief of Albuquerque Business First Rachel Sams will moderate the “Managing up and down” panel – listen to Amy Maestas, editor of the Durango Herald; Imaeyen Ibanga, senior context producer at AJ+, Tara Puckey, director of strategic initiatives at Radio Television Digital News Association; and Amy Resnick, editor of Pensions & Investments discuss challenges, obstacles and triumphs.

In Caroline Comport’s Courageous Confidence workshop, we’ll look deeper into the origins of shame and fear and how to overcome them when applying to job opportunities and negotiating salaries.

Registration for the Leadership Symposium is $75. When you sign up for both the Symposium and Lessons in Longform with Lisa Heyamoto, get the discounted rate of $50 each ($100 for both workshops). Register for CAMP and the symposium here.
