JAWS Welcomes Karla Mares as Spring 2026 Intern
Karla Mares is a University of New Mexico strategic communications student interning with JAWS during the spring of 2026.
Journalism & Women Symposium (JAWS) is proud to announce Karla Mares as its spring 2026 intern.
Karla was born and raised in San Diego, California and moved to Albuquerque in 2024 where she is studying as a third-year Journalism and Mass Communication student at the University of New Mexico, concentrating in Strategic Communication. As a proud first-generation college student and an Army veteran, she has been passionate about a career in media from a young age and aims to pursue a career in public relations. She also values freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
Outside of the classroom, she enjoys running, musicals and other live performances, as well as exploring true crime stories for their in-depth reporting. She is also involved in Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Inc., where she contributes to leadership development, mentorship, and service projects within the community.
“I am excited for the opportunity to learn from and support women journalists through the incredible resources JAWS provides,” Karla said. “I hope to strengthen my communication, writing, and interpersonal skills while gaining hands-on experience that will prepare me for a career in public relations.”
Karla’s internship is made possible by the New Mexico Local News Fellowship and Internship program operated by the Communication & Journalism Department at the University of New Mexico, which provides career development experiences for journalism students and graduates from New Mexico public universities.
Since 1985, Journalism & Women Symposium (JAWS) has been for working journalists, journalism educators and researchers from across the United States. Members meet in person and online to share resources, support, training and information about the issues that affect women in the industry. JAWS advances the professional empowerment and personal growth of women in journalism and advocates for more inclusive coverage of the diverse experiences and cultures that comprise our society.
